News From the East - Masonic Membership in the new Millennium
The Grand Lodge of Minnesota's membership committee has selected Arcana Lodge to participate in the pilot program they are calling Masonic Membership in the new Millennium or M3. To kick off the program the Grand Lodge Membership Committee will make a presentation on the M3 Program following our meeting on October 12th. This program will be coordinated with the Arcana Lodge Membership Committee that is chaired by Brother John Fosdick. John will be assisted by our Senior Warden Dave Sibben and Past Master Joe Macko. The membership committee will be starting on the right foot with the four new candidates we will be initiating this fall. One of these candidates will progress through the traditional three degrees presented here at Arcana Lodge. The other three will be going through the One-Day-to-Masonry Class on October 24th. The dates for the three degrees are as follows: First Degree on October 5th, Second Degree on October 19th, and the Third Degree will be on November 16th.
Saturday, October 24th, 1998 will be a day to remember. Minnesota Masonic history will be made on that day with the first ever One-Day-to-Masonry membership class. Additionally hundreds of Northeast Minneapolis children will remember it as the day they got their free Halloween pumpkin from the Masons on the corner of Lowry and Central. And still others will remember October 24th because of the wonderful dinner they ate at the Eastern Star's Annual Harvest Dinner. Hopefully, a few men will take notice of us at our open house and after reading one of the new pamphlets we will be handing out will ask us about joining our Lodge.
The reservations are already starting to roll in for dinner the night of our Awards presentation on Monday, October 26th. We are planning to have a very large group that night when we honor our 25 and 50-year members. It will be extra special, as the Past Masters of Arcana Lodge will be in their dress aprons and manning the officers stations for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The following weekend on All Saints Day, Sunday, November 1st, the members of Arcana Lodge will be honoring the Widows of our departed brethren. All the members of the Lodge and their families are encouraged to join us on this special day for our Widows. A delicious dinner will be served at 2:00 PM with an entertainment program following dinner. Please make your reservations by calling the lodge at 789-2280 or by putting your name and the number of people attending on the signup sheet on second floor. As always there will be no charge for our widows, and only a nominal charge of $5 for members and guests.
The second week of November has always been a time for Senior DeMolay's to remember Frank S. Land who was the founder of the Order of DeMolay. This year Arcana Lodge is remembering "Dad Land" by hosting a Masonic/DeMolay Reunion on Monday, November 9th following our stated meeting. This event is open to all Master Masons who are interested in the Order of DeMolay, especially Senior DeMolay and past DeMolay Advisors. Please join us for refreshments, reminiscing and plenty of brotherhood.
We are just starting to make plans for our fall fun(d) raiser the Booya Dinner. Booya was a long held annual tradition at Arcana Lodge when brothers would all donate wild game that they had bagged during hunting season. Unfortunately changes in the health code regarding the use of wild game at a public event put a damper on the situation. Therefore this years Booya will be mostly beef and pork, but there may be some farm raised venison thrown in the pot. None the less I promise it will be just as tasty if not quite as wild as in the old days.
The Minnesota State DeMolay Degrees will again be held at Arcana Lodge on Saturday, December 12th, 1998. Lincoln Chapter and Jobs Daughters Bethel #19 will host their annual Mistletoe Mingle later that evening. The guests are also encouraged to stay in town for the Arcana All Temple Christmas Party the next day at 2:00 PM on the 13th.
Until next time, may the blessing of Heaven rest upon us and all regular Masons. May brotherly love prevail and every moral and social virtue cement us.
Fraternally yours,
Douglas R. Roswold, Master

Government can err. Presidents do make mistakes, but the immortal Dante tells us that divine justice weighs the sins of the cold-blooded and the sins of the warm-hearted in different scales. Better the occasional faults of a government that lives in a spirit of charity than the consistent omissions of a government frozen in the ice of its own indifference.

Outstanding Mason of the Month
Bernard Wiklund
Arcana Lodge is proud to acknowledge the outstanding Mason of the month for October, Bernie Wiklund. He became a Mason in Arcana Lodge in 1995, and immediately was an active and dedicated member of the Lodge. He had become Tyler in 1996 and has been proceeding up the "Ladder," and presently is the Senior Deacon. In 1996 he also became a member of the Scottish Rite. On his own initiative he takes outstanding pictures at special Lodge events that magnify the occasion. He takes part in degree work, and is a volunteer for most any job or Lodge function needing a dedicated individual, and he epitomizes what Masonry is all about.
